Queen Conch

Queen Conch

Family: Strombidae
The Queen Conch is very common in the Bahamas. The conch shell is not fully grown until it has the flaring pink lip. It uses this lip to dig into the sandy sea floor. Conchs move around by pushing themselves in short, sudden spurts using their strong, curved foot. They like to live in sandy, grassy areas and they feed on algae and sea grass. The Queen Conch can grow to about 12 inches and is known to produce a pink pearl.

Cool Fact: Conch (the mollusk that lives inside the shell) is one of the most common foods in the Bahamas. It is made into conch salad, conch fritters, cracked conch, conch chowder and conch burgers. The conch shell is often also used for jewellery and ornaments.
